FAQ

Repel generally lasts 2-3 weeks. Longevity will vary depending on the amount of exposure to the elements. The best way to test the effectiveness of the Repel is to take a few drops of water and observe how well the water beads and rolls off of the shoe. If reapplication is needed, we suggest cleaning your shoes with our Premium Shoe Cleaner, allow to fully dry and to reapply Repel following the directions on the bottle.

Repel can be used to waterproof a variety of apparel items. Think Levi’s denim jackets, Carhartt tote bags, New Balance 990’s, Hoka Cliftons, etc.

Use Repel on absorbent materials like suede, nubuck, canvas, mesh, and knits. Leathers that are sealed or have polishes on them (i.e. patent leather) are essentially already waterproof. If Repel is accidentally applied to these types of materials, simply wipe clean with a cloth before it dries.

The shoes should be clean and dry prior to application. Hold bottle upright 6″ to 8” from shoe and spray evenly, covering the entire area of the shoe. Do not oversaturate. Use a cloth to dab and soak up any excess product. Allow to completely dry/cure for 24 hours or more. After the first coat has dried, repeat steps and apply a second coat. Before exposing to liquid, make sure shoes have completely dried.

Keep in mind that no product can make your shoes fully waterproof. Given enough water, they’ll eventually soak through. However, you can achieve a strong water barrier, which should be enough to keep your feet dry in everyday conditions.

Repel also acts as a shoe protectant spray, keeping dirt and dust from attaching and settling into your sneakers. It comes in a non-aerosol can that sprays a continuous fine mist, and it’s PFAS-free, so you don’t have to worry about breathing in any toxic “forever” chemicals.

Tip: The longer you allow Repel to cure, the stronger the repellency.

To deep clean your shoes, you’ll need a bowl of water, a brush (like the Jason Markk Durables Brush or Delicates Brush, depending on the material), a towel, and of course our ultra-concentrated Premium Deep Cleaning Solution. Deep cleaning your shoes takes about 20 minutes (not including dry time).

  1. Remove the laces and inserts from your shoes. You can hand wash these separately.
  2. Dry brush the shoe surface in order to prevent any dust and dirt from being pushed further into the shoe.
  3. Apply a few drops of the cleaning solution to the brush, and dip it in a bowl of water. Gently scrub the shoe in circular motions, paying attention to tough stains and dirt, and focusing on the midsole and uppers. Wipe off excess solution with a microfiber towel and repeat as needed.
  4. Let the shoes air dry completely before wearing.

Most leather shoes are made of sealed leather, making it difficult for water and stains to penetrate deep, and making them easy to clean. However, we do not recommend cleaning raw, unsealed leather (such as vegetable-tanned leather) because liquid can permanently darken the material and/or cause dye to run.

Our Premium Deep Cleaning Solution not only deep cleans leather, but conditions it with a blend of coconut and jojoba oils.

  1. Start by ensuring the leather is free of dust and dirt using a dry brush
  2. Apply a liberal amount of solution to the same brush, and dip it in a bowl of water to dilute (this stuff is concentrated!)
  3. Gently scrub the surface in a circular motion, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.

You may find it helpful to clean your shoe sections at a time. Work your way around the entire shoe, but avoid soaking the leather. Let the sneakers air dry in a cool place away from direct heat or sunlight.

To restore your white sneakers, start by applying our Ready-to-Use Foam Cleaner to the Delicates Cleaning Brush. Gently scrub the entire shoe, focusing on stained or dirty areas. For tougher stains, use a firmer brush and reapply the cleaner as needed. Use our Quick Wipes to clean the soles. Wipe off any excess solution with a clean microfiber towel and allow the sneakers to air dry.

To keep your sneakers white, regularly clean them and apply a protectant repellent spray, like our Repel Spray, to protect against future stains. Also, store them in a cool, dry place away from dirt, moisture, and excessive sunlight.
